The Old Ice House in McAllen

The old ice house in mcallen on Twitpic

The Old Ice House

So this past Monday night, Sammy (Spare Parts, McAllen) invited me and the rest of our band (Blue Me, McAllen) to an open-mic night at McAllen’s Entertainment District’s The Old Ice House.

For those of you who do not know, The Old Ice House is exactly that.  They used to sell big-ass blocks of ice to people like my mom and dad.  Ah, the ye’ old good days; when McAllen was such a shit-hole that dust storms came in like it’s Iraq in Spring.

What am I talking about?  There are still dust storms around here but people want to play them off all easy-like, saying shit like, “high-winds expected”.

I digress, to the right I have a low quality pic of the front of the place.  The exterior of the place is still as old as the building, and the interior is much the same.  Except for updated walls, a stage, a bar, and lounge areas the building has been kept in much of the same condition as it was 20-years ago.

We went in to jam-out and sure enough, the place is classy.  We were there as the place is finishing its interior so decor was still not complete.  But what I can say is, the place has a old-noir feel to it with a 4-foot stage and enough room for a lot of people (more or less a couple of hundred).  That in addition with a built-in sound system, the place is ready to be bumping.

Maybe I should write a peace on the Downtown Wars because, this place, in addition to many other joints going up in downtown McAllen, add another stop for club/bar hoppers in their 17th Street outing keeping people locked, and loaded, in one geographic location for the night.

One thing about downtown is that if you get hit with the want to wander, you simply gather your entourage and walk next door to drink there; as opposed to (let’s say) Smokin’ Aces in Mission, Fool’s Paradise in Donna, or Johnny’s BBQ in Pharr, where you’d end up drinking there the rest of the night.

Rumors are…

YouTube Preview Image

Ah, rumors…can they be all that bad?  Some use it for intel-reports and others use it for mischief.  I however use rumors as gas for a roaring fire.  My fire?  This fine Web site.  The rumors?  Ha ha, wouldn’t you like to know… Eh, what the hell?  On to the rumors.

Turns out a local band isn’t gone into the abyss for good.  In fact, leaders are meeting to discuss a possible reunion between forces that once kept the metal scene going in the valley (at least here in McAllen).

Speaking of metal, another local band has returned from the depths of dogma hollow and will be making their appearance some time at the end of summer.

Of course, the aforementioned news is about metal, however, underground scene organizers are working to bring a new medium to the valley scene that will be all-inclusive.  Organizers are grassroots and will not encompass festive prints or their resources.  This will require independent forces to work together in a new format.  Feel free to leave ideas behind.

The video?  Goodbar posted the video on a Myspace bulletin and I figured, what the hell?!  It’s a catchy song and the video, although minimalistic, was well done and got my attention.

To scene or not to be scene, that is the question!

Scary EddieToday I have some pretty random links for you.  No worries, most are ”scene” or locally related or whatever.  Currently, though, I’m in a pretty sour mood because I’m having to write about this on IE and not on Firefox.  Why?  Because Firefox is suffering from a cold and the shits.  Don’t ask, it just is.  On to the links.

The front tire digs in to a small turn of the wheel and the vehicle begins to flip over. The guy inside was bouncing back and forth from the front to the back the vehicle. Once it came to a stop, there was no movement.

It’s asked, “Who is your favorite Pokemon?” at the Valley Hardcore forums.  What the fuck?!  When did hardcore turn into cute anime?

Will Ripley wants to send his shout-outs to hiz peepz…here.

McAllen is taking steps to closer watch the people that live in the city.  That’s why I like to party in Pharr’s and Mission’s night life.  I was at 17th Street the other night and damn, I felt watched at every step what with all the cameras and police.

Some of you might rememeber when I helped Ramsey launch the all new Official Magazine X Web site - well, after the aquittal, I am happy to report that Frank is lead blogger at MagXonline.com.

Did you see that shit?  Mexican police fighting with Mexican federal police!  Legalize all narcotics in their natural form.  Meaning, the cocaine tree is legal, just not the processed white powder from it.  Weed would be legal with common rules for safety, much like alcohol.  I think we can be reasonable.  Why the USA (the biggest buyer of this shit) is blind to it, I don’t know.  But politicians will be crying like little girls when the shit hits the fan.  Because after all, this isn’t about getting high — this is about supply and demand for a product, however mostly the right, that people are willing to kill and die for.

I feel re-born, so to speak

img00300The past several weeks have been crazy!  Alas, I’m glad things are back to a sense of normality.  This past weekend, I jammed out with some swinging cats.

Mostly, I got to enjoy the weekend with the family, which was, needless to say - relaxing.

The other thing this weekend that took over my senses was a marathon of Quantum Leap on Hulu.com.

My brain was mush after all the leaping to and fro one wacky adventure to another.  This nonsense was continuing to the point that I began to feel ooze dripping from my right ear.  It was great.

Anyway.  I’m back and will be busting my old stunts again.

This past weekend; a friend of mine (along with some obscure, however stuck-up faces) landed on Festiva’s ‘09 Sexiest Men/Women of the Valley Scene with a cover shot and the whole nine-yards.  This tells me that Festiva really doesn’t get out much.  ‘Cause if they did, I’d have been on there.

I guess it’s up to them if they want to have a bubble-gum watered-down hoe-down valley version of TMZ, but who cares?  I would have made it.  I am pure All-American Beefcake and if I was on the cover, the fucking mag would have had to have been served with fries and a shake.

Either way, good times are what matters most.  I’ll be updating the concert calendar this week with upcoming shows that are what is making our music scene!  I’m back baby and I missed you, too.
